Massachusetts Health Connector remains open to new enrollments through Jan. 23

Deadline for New Year coverage is Dec. 23, beyond federal end date of Dec. 15 December 14, 2020 – The Massachusetts Health Connector, which provides affordable commercial health insurance to more than 275,000 people, remains open to new enrollments through Jan. 23, with a deadline of Dec. 23 for anyone who needs coverage to start the New Year. Those deadlines are beyond the federal Open Enrollment deadline. The federal government’s healthcare.gov closes to new coverage on Dec. 15. In order to ensure everyone who needs coverage has the opportunity to sign up, the Health Connector maintains deadlines that extend beyond the federal government timing. “Having health insurance is always vital to ensure people’s physical and financial health, but more than ever, having coverage is necessary as we try to keep people safe from COVID-19 and deliver COVID-19 testing and treatment benefits to Massachusetts residents,” said Louis Gutierrez, the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Health Connector. “We encourage everyone to get covered and stay covered – that means having health insurance and wearing a mask and staying socially distant.” The Health Connector is the state-based health insurance exchange for Massachusetts, offering affordable commercial plans to people who do not get coverage through their employer or other sources. On June 22, 2020, the Health Connector announced in an Administrative Bulletin an extension to the special enrollment period in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) emergency through July 23, 2020 to assist uninsured Massachusetts residents seeking health coverage. (The extended enrollment period was previously set to end June 23.) Massachusetts Health Connector continues extended enrollment as nearly 45,000 people enroll in new plans, update current coverage

April 28, 2020 – The Massachusetts Health Connector continues to help people who need health insurance after losing coverage or income due to the coronavirus, with a May 23 deadline ahead for June 1 coverage. In order to help residents who lose their employer-sponsored coverage during the economic crisis created by the coronavirus, the Health Connector has created an extended enrollment period through May 25, so that anyone who needs health insurance can come to the exchange and get into coverage. Additionally, current Health Connector members are encouraged to update their income information if they lost their jobs or working hours have changed, to ensure they are in the plan that provides appropriate financial help paying for their coverage. Since the start of March, nearly 45,000 people have enrolled in a new coverage or updated their coverage. More than 12,000 people have reported a change in income and have moved to a new Health Connector plan type. An additional 11,600 Health Connector members have updated their information and are now in MassHealth coverage. During this important time, we want to let you know that we are making every effort to make sure there will be no interruption in service for our members on account of the current coronavirus health crisis. All actions that members need to complete to maintain coverage are still available—such as making payments, sending documents, and updating account information. However, to protect people’s safety, our walk-in centers are closed until further notice. Our call center will stay open, but it may be operating with longer wait times as we work to help members. We’re asking all members to use our online resources as much as possible in the coming days to reduce exposure to other people in Massachusetts and help us keep our call center services as available to as many people as possible. Important information about coverage for coronavirus (COVID-19)

Insurers in Massachusetts, including those that offer health plans through the Health Connector, are now required to cover the cost of testing and treatment for members who may be affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19). The Massachusetts Division of Insurance (DOI) has asked health insurance companies to take several steps to help protect people in Massachusetts against coronavirus, including the following: Set up telephone helplines to answer questions about coronavirus Make telehealth services more available and at a lower cost to members. Massachusetts Health Connector offers extended enrollment for uninsured individuals to ease coronavirus fears

On March 30, the special enrollment deadline was extended an additional month to May 25, 2020. On March 6, the Division of Insurance announced that Massachusetts health insurers are now required to cover the cost of testing and treatment for members who may be affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19), including not charging co-pays or deductibles for those services. The Health Connector’s decision to open enrollment to anyone without coverage ensures Massachusetts residents concerned about contracting coronavirus can access necessary services without cost barriers.
